Forestry England’s 670-acre wood on a wartime airfield: concrete runways and perimeter roads that stay walkable in any weather, conifer and broadleaf woodland, open grass and the butterfly glades. A favourite with local dog walkers.

The walk

Pick up the trails from either car park. The old runways and perimeter track make a firm circuit of about two and a half miles that is dry underfoot even in winter; grass rides and earth paths cut through the plantations between them, and the butterfly glades are worth the detour in summer. Fragments of the RAF buildings and the control tower remain. Cyclists use the runways — keep dogs close near them.
