Accessibility: A 1.6 km loop on a firm surfaced track, 2 m wide and gate-free for 1.4 km; the main entrance has a kissing gate; steeper unsurfaced paths to the south and east. Nearest toilets at Belton Garden Centre, about 2 miles.

The walk

Start at the Woodland Trust car park on Five Gates Lane. The surfaced access track makes a 1.6 km loop inside the wood and is the easy option in any weather; grass tracks and earth paths lead off it through the meadows and older woodland, and a 1 km surfaced route links south-west towards Grantham.

Cattle graze fenced, marked areas in the summer months — keep dogs on a lead there and follow the signs. The ground is flat in the northern part and climbs towards the south and east. The Trust asks dog walkers to keep to its guidance for dogs in woods.
